Chocolat Quilt Top
I’ve finished piecing the quilt top on the vintage machine. It was so much fun to use my grandmother’s machine. It was like a step back in time.
I can see why there is such an attraction to the old machines. It’s amazing to think that an 83 year old sewing machine is still so smooth to operate. However, I don’t think I’ll be using it moving forward- not as much as I thought I would anyway.
The knee lever took a lot of practice to get used to. I think I did master it. The problem was that when I went over any type of hump in the seals - which is unavoidable with patchwork - the feed dogs stopped pushing the fabric through and the machine would make a bunch of stitches in the same spot.
This necessitated me pulling the fabric through and resulted in a seam that had a group of tiny stitches followed by a long stitch. I had to be ever vigilant to stop this happening and keep the fabric straight when stitching the seams.
Anyhow, I did finish this quilt top.
I’m not sure that I love it. After all, the fabric is from deep stash and a few years old now. The quilt top is a large lap size. I’ll be getting a new-to-me longarm machine very shortly and this one will be good to get back into the swing of things.
