ModMountains Quilt - Part 2
In my previous post, I said I was making a quilted cushion to test my quilting design for my ModMountains Quilt. Here is the unquilted piece.
I really think this quilt needs some simple texture on it. Sure, I can go fancy and do swirls and lots of interesting stuff. Instead, I like to evaluate how the finished piece will look and how to compliment the quilt top. This quilt is striking in it's graphic simplicity and there really is not a lot of negative space. Therefore, a simple design will be the best fit.
I chose this horizontal wave quilting that blurs the background and gives some lovely texture to the piece. I quilted up a backing in the same way.
To make the cushion, I sewed an invisible zipper to the bottom of the two pieces, essentially joining them. I then pinned the two pieces together with the invisible zip done up. Starting at the top end of the zipper, I stitched some reinforcing back-and-forth stitches close to the zip, then part way around the cushion, stopped and opened the zipper halfway so I could turn the cushion, then finished stitching around the rest of the cushion. At each corner, I took a few stitches across the corner diagonally. I did a quick zig zag to finish the raw edges, then turned the cushion right way out and added the insert.
Simple!
And in case you are wondering, I made this Adirondack chair in a local women's woodworking class.
