Flowering Gum Quilt - Part 4
Oh hi, it’s been a while. Last time I was here, I was beginning the quilting of the flowering gum quilt. Of course, I have finished the quilting, but it has taken me a little while just to get to writing up about it.
Here it is, all finished. I love it. I had a lot of fun making the shadow leaves and stems. The background fill was a TON of work. It needed to be small to allow the other parts to pop and also it had to both be interesting and kind of boring at the same time. I trialled a few designs on the side before settling on this little concentric arc design. It was super tedious to quilt, bit I think it worked out great.
Once it was all quilted, it was time for a wash and blocking. I am aways a bit nervous about putting my quilts into the washing machine (I don’t know why - it’s not really rational) but this one washed up a treat and really added a lovely crinkle to the texture. Next step was squaring the quilt off. My partner has a laser leveller (he is a carpenter) and we used it to be sure the quilt was absolutely square.
I decided to face the quilt instead of binding it. I haven’t done this before, so I just googled a tutorial and went for it. It’s coming along well. I haven’t finished hand-stitching the facing yet, but it’s coming along slowly. I can’t wait to hang this on my wall!
